Arnold’s green fingered evening of Celebration
ARNOLD IN BLOOM - presentation night
This year's annual garden competition came to its conclusion on Friday 29 September with the
presentation of awards at the Balfour club in Arnold. All the I i
gardens we visited were a delight to view and all had something
different to offer. We were grateful to Roy Fox who
made the final decisions.
The children who entered always impress us with their efforts
and knowledge, so well done to Laura and Daniel, Chloe and
Fiona, keep up the good work. The head teachers of the
schools are to be congratulated for the enterprising way in
which they integrate horticulture into the growth and development
of young children. The enthusiasm of parents and
grandparents says much about the ethos of the school.
At the other end of the age scale, residential home managers
and the residents themselves demonstrate the value of gardening as a physical and social activity.
The town centre premises who enter continue to show their
commitment to keeping Arnold colourful.
SPAN is a rehabilitation day centre and the staff here are skilled
at utilising the therapeutic value of horticulture. This is a valuable
community project and we wish them continued success.
Our thanks go to the Balfour club for their hospitality; to Shirley for
such a magnificent buffet and to Alan for doing all the paperwork
and taking the photographs on the night. Thanks also to our MP
Vernon Coaker who presented the awards.
An apology - I was doing the dialogue for the slide presentation
and unfortunately my voice 'went' halfway through. So to those of
you who were not mentioned by name with a description of your
garden, I do apologise. Unfortunately, Joy the leading light of
Arnold In Bloom, was unable to be with us. Joy, we send you our
love and look forward to seeing you back next year.
And finally, out thanks to you the entrants - you are Arnold In Bloom, we just bully you into doing it..
We hope everyone enjoyed the experience and presentation night. We look forward to seeing you
next year.
Rita Marsden.
It’s been a long winter. Spring is in the air and our thoughts
go to warm sunny days and nights sitting in the garden.
But before we can do that there is a lot of work and
planning to do. What can we do to make it a pleasure to
sit in and be proud of the work we have endured?
We all have different size and shape of gardens and
different ideas as the committee of Arnold in Bloom Group
found out last year. Every garden we had the pleasure of
visiting had something different, we were amazed at some
of the designs and planting we were viewing, each of them
had “Wow!” Factor.
We are yet again having a Flourishing Arnold competition
and hoping this year will be another successful year.
There were 45 entries last year, here’s hoping 2006 will be
a bumper year. So go for it and enter Flourishing Arnold.
You may say my garden’s nothing special, its my pleasure.
But share that with Arnold in Bloom. There are some
beautiful gardens out there so show them with pride - its all
part of community spirit and its fun.
The categories this year are: -
Resident gardens
Young peoples projects
Business premises (Pubs, Clubs etc)
Community projects (Nursing Homes etc)
Schools
Arnold in Bloom have had 2 exhibitions at Arnold Library to
show all the entries of 2005, this was viewed and enjoyed
by many and we hope it will encourage people to participate
in the 2006 competition.
There will be a display of some entries from the 2005
competition in Arnold Library the first week in May, so pop
along and have a look and pick an entry form up at the
same time.
If you wish you can always enter by phoning Joy on 0115
9566291 or Rita on 0115 9203181 who will only be too
pleased to take details and answer any questions you wish
to ask. We will also be at the Arnold Carnival on Arnot Hill
Park on the weekend of 17 - 18th June where we will have
a display of photos and take entries so come along and
have a chat.
The closing date for the competition will be 18th June 2006.
Judging will take place from July onwards - we will endeavour
to view your entry when it’s best for you.
Here’s to a glorious and productive summer please enter
and make it our best year yet.
We look forward to meeting you.
Happy Gardening,
Arnold in Bloom Committee
